Safe Removal of Dental Amalgam Fillings

Why Amalgam Removal Needs Care

Dental amalgam, commonly known as ‘silver fillings,’ consists of:

  • 50% mercury
  • 20-35% silver
  • 6-15% copper
  • 8-15% tin
  • Occasionally, small amounts of zinc

The Minamata Convention on Mercury, established by the United Nations Environment Programme, mandates that scrap amalgam be disposed of as toxic waste.

At Sydney Holistic Dental Centre, we have avoided using mercury amalgam since 1987 and use advanced safety protocols to minimise patient exposure during removal. We follow the Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique (SMART) recommended by the International Association of Oral Medicine & Toxicology (IAOMT).

Understanding Mercury Toxicity

Mercury is a highly toxic element, and exposure can adversely affect various body systems. Mercury vapour is released, which is absorbed into the bloodstream, especially during temperature changes or friction from chewing.

SMART Protocol
for Safe Mercury Removal

Our SMART protocol includes:

  • Using a rubber dam to prevent ingestion of amalgam debris
  • Providing medical air to direct vapour away from the patient
  • Employing high-strength suction to avoid mercury recirculation
  • Using tungsten carbide burs to minimise heat and procedure time
  • Implementing negative ion generators and air purifiers

The Holistic Approach to Amalgam Removal

Alternative Materials

Mercury amalgam fillings can be replaced with biocompatible materials such as composite resin or ceramic restorations. We prefer ceramic for its durability and natural appearance.

Removal Process

The number of appointments needed depends on the size and location of the fillings. The removal procedure includes the SMART protocol, and the cost is based on the replacement material, not the removal process itself.
